Unexpected effect of Viagra – a possibility to treat dementia.

unexpected-effect-of-viagraViagra is one of the most popular “men’s” medicines. It has become a real “magic wand” for men suffering from erection problems. It is known that this medical remedy was originally developed for curing cardiovascular ailments. The developers of Viagra believed that the active agent of the drug would increase blood current in the heart muscle and help to reduce blood pressure. But men who had taken the medicament at the stage of clinic experiments experienced an improving erection. Therefore, the developers continued their research in a new direction. In 1998, Viagra was released to the market. It caused a real revolution in sexology and treatment of male ailments. It was the first medicament that led to the full recovery of male erection. This effect emerges only when a male person is sexually aroused. It is not a hormonal medical remedy, and it does not belong to aphrodisiacs either. In recent years more and more studies have been conducted to detect the possibility of using Viagra for curing other diseases, apart from impotence.

Research on new effect of the medicament

The British scientists believe that the main active agent of the medicament (i.e. Sildenafil) can help in curing dementia. Dementia occurs because of impaired blood current in the brain. Sildenafil improves blood current in the penile organ. Thus, according to the British scientists, this active agent is able to exert the same effect on the brain, and thereby prevent the progression of dementia. In late 2014, scientists started to carry out research in this area.

Over the past decades, millions of dollars have been spent on developing new medical remedies against dementia. However, scientists are not able to get a drug that could really change the course of the flow of this dangerous disease. Therefore, more and more scientists are studying already existing medicaments to identify their new properties, because the cost of such research is lower than inventing new medicaments.

Opinion of experts

The head of the research team, Mr. Hainsworth, says that the new study is intended to study the well-researched and safe agent (Sildenafil). While the substance has few undesirable effects, it is generally safe for patients with dementia. The main objective of the study at this stage is to identify whether Sildenafil can enhance blood current in the brain.
